Estimator

Barton are seeking a dynamic and self motivated estimator who can work at the fast changing pace of our business. You will be the initial contact for our clients and your role will to be assist them in finding the most cost effective solution with a ‘can-do attitude’. You must be able to deal with multiple tenders concurrently and have a good understanding of cut and fill earthworks along with drainage and highway construction and preferably a knowledge of stabilisation.

The Role:

  • Assist with selection of designer / likely JV partners
  • Identification of key subcontractors
  • Meetings with key stakeholders / subcontractors to develop early relationships
  • Review available information from tender documents
  • Assist in the preparation and response to PQQ’s
  • Research technologies / project background
  • Prepare tender submissions
  • Pricing of tenders to ensure that the works can be delivered within the Client requirements, highlighting to the Managing Director any issues which would prevent a bid from being submitted.
  • Drive the development of Value Engineering/innovation
  • Provide technical input on methodology and programme
  • Identify client decision makers
  • Identify the work winning angles of how Barton can implement their Unique Selling point (USP)
  • Review tender and advise on key deliverables within the bid, highlight the workscope to the Contracts Manager/Managing Director to review if the project will be tendered by Barton.

Skills required:

Project Manager

We are looking for an energetic Project Manager to join our growing team, who can multi task in the management of multiple projects, providing support, direction and leadership to our site teams. The person applying for the role must have previous experience in a similar role either as a Project Manager in a similar size company or as a Site Agent/sub-agent in a larger organisation.

The role

  • Be familiar with and observe all relevant statutory provisions applicable to construction and related industries.
  • Implement the company’s procedures for dealing with sub-contractors
  • Provide an overall health & safety plan for each site, making an adequate assessment of the risks involved, and ensuring that safe systems of work and method statements are produced, followed and reviewed.
  • Prepare cost plan in conjunction with the Project QS.
  • Reconcile costs spent to date and future costs on a fortnightly basis
  • Monitor labour and plant costs on a weekly basis against planned activity.
  • Reconcile bulk materials and wastage.
  • Report additional unplanned costs.
  • Assess the impact of change and entitlement to Extension of Time (EOT).
  • Ensure programme revisions are issued to the client team monthly.
  • Ensure detailed programmes that support delivery of the main programme are produced, used and reported again at weekly team meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with the Barton Management System, quality and environmental plans.

Commercial Manager

We are seeking an enthusiastic Commercial Manager to join our growing team at Barton. The role would suit a person looking for the next step up from a Senior Quantity Surveying position who has a proven track record in a similar role. Experience of earthworks and civil engineering infrastructure is a must. You will be working with the Contracts Manager and Managing Director and you will have full accountability for the successful delivery of a sustainable business. This includes the full range of business activities from business development, work winning, staff selection and development, project or framework delivery, client and subcontractor relationships to external representation of Barton Plant and in particular providing a high level of commercial and contractual support to the business.

The Role

  • Accountable (together with the Contracts Manager) for maintaining a forward workload plan with sufficient high calibre, suitable opportunities to sustain the business unit at its target size and growth plans.
  • Establish and maintain effective client relationships that develop, repeat, work-on-work, negotiated or framework opportunities.
  • Provide and direct suitable commercial resources that reduce commercial risk and maximise potential opportunities in work winning bids.
  • Provide personal commercial input to tender settlement including but not limited to Programme review

Preliminaries (staff, attendances, etc.)

  • Support all post submission tasks required to convert tender into an award.
  • Assess the Main Contract conditions and advise on risk and scope areas including timely production of the tender risk assessment
  • Assess sub-contract packages for incorporation into the main tender when required.
  • Assist the Estimating team as required.
  • Undertake ‘Health checks’ for every live project on a monthly basis as a minimum with particular focus on change management and adherence to notifications required under the Contract
  • Check suitability and effectiveness of project strategies being implemented. Redirect as appropriate and support team by identifying true priorities.
  • Report project and business status to MD as required on a monthly basis and fortnightly as a minimum
  • Communicate business critical information to project teams as directed.
  • Carry out line management approvals as required by management systems.
  • Proactively engage in extra-curricular activities that require Barton Plant representation.
  • Manage recruitment for business unit and assist with allocation of internal resources
  • Maintain collaborative links in to key suppliers and designers to maximise win-win opportunities at all stages.
  • Ensure that the client aspirations are understood, met and exceeded
  • Ensure consultant relationships are professional and productive
  • Being aware of and actioning any potential business development opportunities
  • Support and develop the whole team in their general commercial awareness

Site Engineer

We are looking for dynamic, self motivated site engineers with experience in earthworks and infrastructure projects to join our expanding team at Barton. You must be proficient in trimble GPS and modelling, able to upload and interrogate setting out data used in our 3D dig systems. You should also have a proven track record of delivering works on site to a high standard, attention detail and to producing a quality product is a must. You are also required to have a good understanding of the specification for highway works, in particular the earthworks and drainage series in order to competently deliver our earthworks and groundworks projects. You will be part of a growing team, working on exciting projects across the midlands and south east.

The Role:

  • Establish accurate and clear setting out on the ground that site operatives can work to.
  • Communicate clearly to the operatives what the setting out is and how it should be used.
  • Set out in advance so that time is available to carry out any secondary checks.
  • Maintain the long term setting out.
  • Get involved in the planning of your particular section so that you are aware when setting out control is required.
  • Plan a small section of your work and monitor progress to get an understanding of outputs.
  • Be aware of the information requirements.
  • Keep accurate records of as built dates in diaries and on construction drawings.
  • Keep accurate records of events which are affecting the project plan or disrupting the work.
  • Communicate on a timely basis any such event to your Site Supervisor and Project Manager and a member of the Quantity Surveying staff.
  • Carry out your responsibilities from the site management plan.
  • Conduct as built surveys
  • Complete the HSQE hand over file
  • Compile RAMS with input from your Site Supervisor and Project Manager

Skills

  • BTEC/Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to set out using GPS and total station
  • Ability to use proficiently LSS and trimble systems
  • Calculate volumes and setting out requirements

Forklift Engineer (Mobile)

We are looking to recruit a Mobile Forklift Engineer to cover the East Midlands with occasional travel to other regions. You should have at least one years’ experience as a forklift engineer, the successful candidate will have a very good back up support function but must also be capable of working well on their own. They must also be someone with high standards of workmanship & be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner when on our customers sites.

Trainee/Junior Field Sales Representative

We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and passionate individual to join our existing team and drive growth in line with our business plans.

The Role:

  • Identify new prospects and develop these accounts to generate new business
  • Manage existing customers to maintain and increase revenue
  • Co-ordinate order pipeline with production team to ensure stock availability
  • Generate, issue and follow up quotations to conclusion, recording all sales and activity on a CRM

Sales Co-ordinator

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and organised individual with a ‘can do’ attitude to join the team as a sales co-ordinator.

The Role:

  • Collate and manage sales enquiries both on the phone and via email
  • Manage confirmed orders from new and existing trade accounts
  • Assign orders and enquiries to appropriate teams and sites
  • Manage and issue current stock lists to active and potential customers
  • Analyse sales data to manage minimum stock levels for routine business
  • Liaise with production team to ensure availability of stock for major projects
  • Liaise with weighbridge operators regarding anticipated daily demands
