Bennie joins Building Equality

Date: Category: Group

Bennie is proud to have joined Building Equality, an alliance of consultants, engineers, developers, contractors and institutions who are passionate about working together and harnessing their collective power to drive LGBT+ inclusion in the construction, engineering and built-environment industry.

Building Equality shares our passion and vision for creating an environment that is truly welcoming, inclusive and supportive for LGBT+ professionals across the UK. This is a core value in the workplace at Bennie, we strongly believe everyone has the right to come to work and be celebrated for who they are.

The alliance utilises activities and initiatives to; support cross-industry collaboration, support organisations in setting up and maintaining employee networks, promote the industry and the importance of inclusion, and encourage and empower employers to make inclusive working environments.

In 2020 we wanted to do something to help start a conversation, drive change and showcase our support for the LGBT+ community. We took 20 tonnes of earthmoving steel – a Caterpillar D6 bulldozer – and wrapped it in PRIDE colours for all to see. The PRIDE dozer was sent out to our construction sites to act as a permanent reminder to anyone that diversity should be everywhere.

In 2021 we are excited to continue our support, as part of a network of like-minded people focused on collaboration, support and the promotion of inclusion within our industries.

Matthew Ayres, Group Managing Director comments ‘As a leader in a family business, one that predominately operates within the construction & manufacturing sectors, I have experienced first-hand how important inclusivity is in the workplace, and how real change needs to be facilitated from the top down within any working environment. In 2021 every single business has a responsibility to be diverse, and business leaders need to take action and ensure that their workplaces are as welcoming internally, as they are to their customers externally. I truly look forward to working with Building Equality to help shape the future of inclusivity in the UK workplace.
